The Motor Control and Neurorehabilitation Lab of the University of Georgia is recruiting 1-2 highly motivated PhD student(s) to start in Spring 2026 or Fall 2026 (start date is flexible) under Shijun Yan. This is a full-time, on-site position within UGA’s Kinesiology PhD program.
The student(s)’ research will focus on neurorehabilitation, with the goal of improving motor function (i.e., balance, gait, etc) in individuals with neurological conditions. Please visit this page to find Dr. Yan's research interests.

This position will be fully funded through research/teaching assistantships which cover tuition for four years and provide a competitive stipend.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor or Master’s degree in kinesiology, biomechanics, biomedical engineering, mechanical/electrical/mechatronics engineering, or a related field. A master’s degree is preferred.
- Prior research experience in robotics, human movement science, or rehabilitation science
- Strong motivation for translational, interdisciplinary research
- Experience with programming (Matlab, LabView, Python, or statistical software) is a plus
- Biomechanical analysis of gait
- Neurophysiological assessment (i.e., Electromyography, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, Electroencephalogram)
- Data collection of human behavioral research (motor control & cognition)
- Scientific writing and presentation
- Clinical interaction and research with patient populations
