  • Senior Ergonomist/Human Factors Consultant

    Do you want to work as a trusted expert, not as a bureaucrat or internal advisor?

    About Dohrmann Consulting
    Established in 1981, Dohrmann Consulting is Australia’s leading safety and ergonomics consultancy. We are nationally recognised for delivering clear, practical and defensible expert advice across ergonomics, human factors, forensic engineering, biomechanics, and applied science.
    Our experts are trusted by courts, regulators, lawyers and organisations to analyse complex ergonomics and safety problems, identify root causes, and form sound, independent opinions grounded in evidence and professional judgment.
    We are a close‑knit, highly professional team that values technical integrity, independence of thought, collaboration and clarity of communication.
    We offer flexibility, strong peer support, and work that is intellectually demanding, meaningful and varied.

    The opportunity
    We are seeking an experienced Senior Ergonomist/Human Factors Consultant to join our Melbourne team.
    This is a senior expert role suited to someone who wants to apply their ergonomics or human factors expertise at a high professional level. You will be forming and expressing independent opinions, tackling complex safety and injury problems, and taking real ownership of your work.
    You will work across a diverse range of matters, combining forensic investigation and expert opinion work with ergonomics and safety consulting.
    The balance of projects will reflect your background and interests, but the common thread is rigorous analysis, defensible reasoning and practical outcomes.
    This role will appeal to someone who prefers technical depth, autonomy and professional authorship over large‑organisation hierarchy or regulatory process.

    What you will do
    Expert investigations and opinions
    You will initially contribute to, and progressively take responsibility for, expert opinion work in personal injury and liability matters, including investigations involving:
    • manual handling and musculoskeletal injuries;
    • slips, trips and falls;
    • plant, machinery and vehicle incidents; and
    • product, equipment and system failures.
    You will work closely with senior experts and benefit from structured mentoring, peer review and governance processes to ensure your work meets the standards required for admissible expert evidence.
    You do not need to arrive as a finished expert witness. What matters is your capacity for sound judgment, disciplined reasoning and clear communication.

    Ergonomics and safety consulting
    You will also deliver high‑quality consulting services, including:
    • workplace and task‑based ergonomics assessments;
    • manual handling risk assessments;
    • safety audits and inspections;
    • design reviews of buildings, plant, equipment, products and processes; and,
    • ergonomics and safety training.
    Our projects regularly span workplaces, public environments, products and systems, requiring a practical and adaptable application of ergonomics and human factors principles.

    About you - essential
    You will have:
    • an undergraduate qualification in any of physiotherapy, occupational therapy, human movement, biomechanics, engineering, science, nursing, industrial design, or a closely related discipline;
    • postgraduate qualifications and/or substantial professional experience in ergonomics, human factors, WHS, biomechanics, rehabilitation or a related field;
    • at least seven (7) years of relevant professional experience;
    • experience in incident investigation, system or product failure analysis, or similarly rigorous analytical work;
    • a demonstrated ability to develop practical, defensible safety solutions;
    • strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex issues clearly to non‑technical audiences; and,
    • a sound working knowledge of ergonomics and safety guidance and principles as applied to real‑world safety problems.
    About you - highly regarded
    • Certified Professional Ergonomist (CPE) status with HFESA, or working toward it;
    • experience contributing to expert reports, litigation support, regulatory or coronial matters;
    • experience applying ergonomics or human factors at a system or organisational level; and,
    • demonstrated mentoring or technical leadership capability.
    Why join Dohrmann Consulting?
    • deep, case‑based technical work — not policy or bureaucracy;
    • genuine autonomy and ownership of your work;
    • strong internal technical support and mentoring;
    • flexible work arrangements and real work‑life balance;
    • competitive remuneration and bonus structure; and,
    • inner‑Melbourne office with excellent access and parking.
    Diversity and inclusion
    We value diversity and welcome applicants from a wide range of professional and life backgrounds. The personal qualities that matter most are technical integrity, curiosity and sound judgment.
