  • Postdoctoral Research Fellow Opening at MEDSTAR HEALTH, Baltimore (MD)

The Innovation in Motion Laboratory (iMoLab) at MedStar Health is hiring a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellow. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in human movement sciences, engineering, biomechanics, and/or kinesiology, and will collaborate with medical doctors and engineers under the direct supervision of the lab director, Dr. Dario Martelli.

The iMoLab is a 2,700-square-foot, state-of-the-art research hub for human motion analysis within the Musculoskeletal Research and Innovation Center at MedStar Health Union Memorial Hospital. The lab is equipped with the GRAIL system from Motek Medical, a 12-camera Vicon motion analysis system, portable and fixed Bertec force plates, a HUMAC NORM dynamometer, Delsys EMG sensors, XSens wearable motion capture system, and Artinis functional near-infrared spectroscopy.

Our main goal is to advance new methods and technologies for the characterization, augmentation, and restoration of motor functions. Our research spans multiple disciplines, including engineering, kinesiology, and medicine, with a strong emphasis on biomechanics, robotics, rehabilitation, and neuroscience. We focus on understanding the neural and biomechanical basis of balance and locomotion, developing more effective screening tests and diagnostic tools for movement impairments, and identifying novel ways to improve movement function.

    Required Qualifications:
    • PhD degree in Engineering, Biomechanics, Kinesiology, or a related discipline.
    • A track record of peer-reviewed publications and a demonstrated ability to disseminate scientific results.
    • Experience with motion analysis technologies (e.g., optical-based motion capture, force plates, EMG, inertial sensors).
    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Strong proficiency in musculoskeletal modeling using OpenSim.
    • Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink and/or Python.
    • Experience with D-flow software from Motek Medical.
    • Experience in developing immersive virtual environments using Unity 3D.
    • Clinical experience with patient populations.
    • Advanced knowledge of statistical methods.
    Your Role:
    • Design and conduct clinical studies involving both healthy volunteers and patients.
    • Develop, validate, and utilize musculoskeletal models (OpenSim) to analyze joint kinetics, muscle forces, and coordination.
    • Disseminate research findings through scientific publications and conferences.
    • Prepare new research proposals to attract federal and industrial funding.
    • Assist with IRB submissions, participant recruitment, data collection, data analysis, and interpretation, as well as grant and manuscript preparation.
    How to Apply:

Interested candidates should submit their CV (maximum 3 pages) to dario.martelli@medstar.net.
