Applications will be open from 1 July 2026 to 22 July 2026 at 12:00 noon, Rome time (CEST, UTC+2) for a PhD position in the Neuroscience PhD Programme, curriculum in Clinical Neurosciences, at the University of Milano-Bicocca.
The position is linked to the research project “Principles of Neural Motor Control–Based Biomarkers for Quantifying and Tracking Motor Recovery in Neurorehabilitation” . This call offers one university scholarship reserved for foreign applicants who reside outside Italy.
The PhD program lasts 3 years, and the position will be supervised by Dr. Daniele Piscitelli. The project aims to develop biomarkers grounded in neural motor control principles to better distinguish true recovery from compensation and to improve mechanism-based monitoring of rehabilitation outcomes. The selected candidate will join the Department of Medicine and Surgery within the Neuroscience PhD Programme,
This PhD project addresses the limitations of current neurorehabilitation outcome measures, which often fail to differentiate true motor recovery from compensatory movement patterns in neurological populations. The proposal aims to translate quantitative assessments of motor performance and movement variability, integrating kinetic and kinematics measures with neuroscience-based biomarkers to capture changes in movement quality and stability. The proposed project aims to improve clinical decision-making and rehabilitation monitoring by enabling more accurate, mechanism-based evaluation of recovery and treatment effectiveness, ultimately supporting more precise and personalized rehabilitation interventions.
The call will be included in Session II, with applications open from 1 July 2026 to 22 July 2026 at 12:00 noon, Rome time (CEST, UTC+2). The PhD programme will start on 1 November 2026.
The PhD starts on 1 November 2026. Candidates must submit a research project in English with the sections state of the art, objective, methods, and experimental design, with a maximum length of 2 pages excluding bibliography. The selection includes assessment of qualifications and publications, assessment of the research project, and an oral examination by videoconference.
During the PhD, the candidate will complete an abroad research period of 12 months under the supervision of Dr. Stanislaw Solnik (University of North Georgia, USA). This is an excellent opportunity for motivated international applicants interested in neurorehabilitation, motor control, and biomarker development in neurological populations.
The amount of the PhD scholarship is € 16,243.00 (approximately $19,022.18) per year gross of the social security charges borne by the fellow. The PhD scholarship is exempt from local income tax and personal income tax (IRPEF).
In addition to the scholarship and within the financial resources available in the University budget, a budget for research activities in Italy and abroad, appropriate to the type of program and in any case equal to 10% of the amount of the scholarship itself.
The amount of the scholarship is increased by 50% for periods spent abroad, for a maximum of 12 months, or 18 months in the case of jointly supervised theses or PhD programs delivered in associated form.
