    The Motion Laboratory at BC Children’s Hospital (TML) is hiring a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellow. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in human movement sciences, engineering, biomechanics, and/or kinesiology, and will collaborate with surgeons, therapists and engineers under the co-supervision of Dr. Tim Bhatnagar, the lab director, and Dr. Calvin Kuo, P.Eng., an Assistant Professor in the School of Biomedical Engineering at the University of British Columbia and Director of the Human Motion Biomechanics Lab (HuMBL) .

    TML is a state-of-the-art program for human motion analysis within Sunny Hill Health Centre @ BC Children’s Hospital. The lab is equipped with TWO combined motion capture camera systems: 1) a 12-camera Qualisys marker-based system, and 2) a 12-camera Qualisys/Theia markerless system. Both systems are synchronized with fixed, embedded AMTI force plates and Delsys surface-EMG sensors. Our lab also utilizes a Novel eMed system to obtain plantar surface pressure maps. A portion of the portfolio of the successful candidate will be to evaluate differences between our motion capture systems and to publish findings.

    Our main goal is to advance new methods and technologies for the characterization of pediatric motor functions. Our motion analysis has historically been focused gait, but we have recently expanded our motion analysis to a variety of other movements both non-clinical (e.g. sport maneuvers related to ACL compromise) and clinical (co-activation of antagonist muscles in upper limb motion) based on interest from our clinical colleagues. Through collaborations with Dr. Kuo and HuMBL, we are furthering our abilities to monitor ACL-reconstruction patients outside of the lab, by using phone-based markerless motion capture approaches. Our research spans multiple disciplines, including engineering, kinesiology and medicine, with a strong emphasis on biomechanics and rehabilitation. We focus on understanding the biomechanical basis of movement and locomotion, translating clinical aims into biomechanical metrics, and identifying novel ways to utilize markerless motion capture with.

    Required Qualifications:
    • PhD degree in Engineering, Biomechanics, Kinesiology, or a related discipline.
    • A track record of peer-reviewed publications and a demonstrated ability to disseminate scientific results.
    • Strong experience with motion analysis technologies (e.g., optical-based motion capture, force plates, EMG).
    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink and/or Python.
    • Experience with Qualisys/QTM and Visual3D softwares.
    • Clinical experience with pediatric patient populations.
    • Advanced knowledge of statistical methods.
    • Experience in developing immersive virtual environments using Unity 3D.
    Your Role:
    • Design and conduct clinical studies involving both healthy volunteers and patients.
    • Interact and meet with non-Engineering/clinical colleagues for research studies.
    • Develop, validate, and utilize musculoskeletal models (OpenSim) to analyze joint kinetics, muscle forces, and coordination.
    • Disseminate research findings through scientific publications and conferences.
    • Prepare new research proposals to attract funding & resources.
    • Assist with Ethics submissions, participant recruitment, data collection, data analysis, and interpretation, as well as grant and manuscript preparation.
    • General management of TML’s research portfolio including supervision of students.
