  • Postdoctoral Position in AI, Lower-Limb Biomechanics, and Medical Image Analysis at Ningbo University & Ningbo No. 2 Hospital, Ningbo, China

The Faculty of Sports Science at Ningbo University, in collaboration with Ningbo No. 2 Hospital, is seeking to recruit talented postdoctoral fellows for an interdisciplinary research program focused on Artificial Intelligence, Lower-Limb Biomechanics, and Medical Image Analysis. The program is coordinated and supervised by Professor Yaodong Gu in close partnership with leading clinical research teams at Ningbo No. 2 Hospital.
This joint initiative bridges cutting-edge computer science and biomedical engineering with direct orthopaedic and clinical applications. Successful candidates will primarily focus on integrating AI/deep learning algorithms with lower-limb biomechanics and multi-modal medical imaging (e.g., knee, ankle, and foot MRI/CT/ultrasound/biplanar X-ray). Key research directions include image segmentation and 3D reconstruction, patient-specific biomechanical modeling, clinical gait analysis, and intelligent clinical decision-support systems for lower-extremity disease diagnosis, surgical planning, and rehabilitation assessment.
The postdoctoral fellows will be primarily based at Ningbo University, with extensive access to clinical datasets, hospital workstations, and patient cohorts at Ningbo No. 2 Hospital. Researchers will have access to state-of-the-art facilities, including high-performance GPU computing clusters, high-speed 3D motion capture systems, dual-belt instrumented treadmills, dynamic plantopressure systems, EMG systems, and advanced hospital imaging platforms. The research environment offers deep, high-impact interdisciplinary collaboration between computational scientists, biomechanists, and orthopaedic/rehabilitation clinicians.
Ningbo University is a key comprehensive university in China, offering a dynamic and supportive research atmosphere. The annual salary for postdoctoral researchers is highly competitive, starting from approximately 300,000 RMB/year (subject to adjustment based on qualifications, clinical experience, and talent tier policies), with additional performance-based bonuses, municipal talent subsidies, and academic achievement rewards. The initial appointment is for two years, with the possibility of extension or future faculty/hospital recruitment tracks based on research productivity and project outcomes.
    Qualifications:
    • A recent Ph.D. (or near completion) in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Biomedical Engineering, Biomechanics, Data Science, Medical Physics, or a closely related field.
    • Strong programming and algorithm development skills and a deep interest in medical applications.
    • Research expertise in one or more of the following areas:
      • Medical image processing (e.g., 2D/3D segmentation, registration, and landmark detection on knee/ankle CT/MRI).
      • Computer vision, deep learning, and multi-modal data fusion.
      • Human lower-limb biomechanical modeling, finite element analysis (FEA), musculoskeletal modeling (OpenSim/AnyBody), or neuromuscular control.
      • Clinical gait analysis and functional movement assessment.
    • Proven track record of high-quality SCI/EI journal publications and research contributions.
    • Strong motivation to work effectively in a hospital-university cross-functional team and communicate across clinical and engineering boundaries.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
    Application Materials:
Qualified applicants are invited to submit:
    1. A current CV including a full list of publications and relevant code repositories (e.g., GitHub/research projects).
    2. A personal statement detailing research background, technical proficiencies, and specific motivation/ideas for AI-biomechanics-clinical research.
    3. Contact information for two or more academic/clinical references.
