This project will investigate whether human movement adaptations to noxious stimuli are driven by noxious stimulus magnitude, subjective pain perception, or both. Using a novel neurophysiological-biomechanical framework, the research will quantify movement responses in a large cohort, determine how pain-relieving interventions influence adaptation, and examine whether increasing pain tolerance through targeted stimulation protocols modifies these responses. This work addresses a critical knowledge gap in understanding the mechanisms underlying persistent movement changes associated with musculoskeletal pain and injury. Findings will inform rehabilitation strategies and provide a foundation for preventing secondary musculoskeletal dysfunction arising from prolonged compensatory movement patterns.
The ideal candidate will have overlapping interest in the fields of neurophysiology and biomechanics. Applicants with backgrounds in human movement (e.g., kinesiology, exercise and sport science, physiotherapy) and/or engineering (e.g., electrical, mechanical, biomedical) are encouraged to apply if their interests align. Essential skills include computer programming (in Python or MATLAB preferably), and strong interpersonal skills. Human subject data collections are a principal focus of this work. Nonessential, though highly desirable skills include 3D motion capture and electromyography data collection and processing.
