The Research Scientist / Biomechanical Engineer position in our lab operates within the Departments of Orthopedic Surgery and Hand Surgery. Our laboratory focuses on applied orthopaedic research, designing and executing custom biomechanical testing protocols across various anatomical structures.
Key Responsibilities:
Key Responsibilities:
- Design & Prototyping: Use CAD software (primarily SolidWorks) to design custom testing fixtures and experimental setups; fabricate prototypes using 3D printing.
- Instrumentation & Controls: Set up, calibrate, and work with various sensors (e.g., load cells, pressure sensors) and actuators/stepper motors for customized mechanical testing setups.
- Specimen Preparation: Prepare and test human cadaveric tissue specimens for research studies.
- Experimental Testing: Execute biomechanical evaluations using material testing machines, optical motion tracking systems, and robotic manipulators.
- Data Analysis & Reporting: Develop scripts (primarily in MATLAB) and spreadsheets to process, analyze, and present experimental data.
- Education: Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Programming: Core coding experience for data analysis (MATLAB preferred, but experience in Python or other programming languages is great).
- Specimen Handling: Willingness and comfort working with cadaveric human tissue.
- On-the-Job Training Provided: Don't hesitate to apply if you aren't familiar with every single tool or piece of equipment listed! Comprehensive hands-on training will be provided for specialized hardware, sensors, motion tracking, and testing protocols. We care most about strong core engineering fundamentals, problem-solving ability, and an eagerness to learn.
