  • Free or cheap software for 3D kinematics from from frontal/sagigital video

    Dear Friend,

A colleague of mine in Psychology wants to film (high speed video) Zebrafish from frontal and sagittal views and then calculate the 3D position of the fish. Does anyone know of cheap or better yet....Free software he can use to make the calculations.

    Thanks for your help

The standard technique is called the Direct Linear Transform. There's MATLAB code on the ISB website, under "DLT & Camera Calibration": http://isbweb.org/software/movanal.html

If Matlab is available, there is a free software, developed by Ty Hedrick, that is widely used in animal biomechanics. It comes with some examples, easy to use and it is well documented.

        Hi Justus,

Another option is Video4Coach. They have a piece of software called SkillSpector that should do what you want, though I've never used it myself. The software looks dated so you may be limited by video formats/resolutions but it's free!

Here is another Matlab based one that may be helpful to you.

            Hello Everyone,

If you're searching for something simple and not so accurate KINOVEA kinovea.org is a quite nice freeware to obtain trajectories and coordinates from 2D data. Next you have to put everything in the same matrix and you'll have your 3D coordinates.
In KAPA-INVENT we are used to it for some sports analysis: http://kapa-invent.eu/kapa-motion-video-analysis

I also want to seek one. But I check these posts here, and more details.
