Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) is one of Europe’s largest graduate recruitment programmes providing candidates with exciting opportunities to work on key strategic projects. KTP projects are based on a partnership between a University and a company or organisation with a recently qualified graduate (the Associate) delivering the project with support from the academic team within the University. For this KTP you will be working with the University of Kent experts in the project area.


As the Associate, you will benefit from a generous training and personal development programme including the opportunity to gain a CMI management qualification. You will also be encouraged to attain membership of a professional organisation and funding support, if appropriate, may be available towards study for a higher degree.

As Research Associate you will:

  • design and execute the testing protocols relating to wearable technologies licensed by Smartlife
  • report on each phase of testing to stakeholders and scientific communities
  • write scientific papers associated with the work for publication in peer reviewed scientific journals
  • train colleagues in the methods for testing and analysis used in the project


To be successful in this role you will have:

  • an MSc in Biomechanics, Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, or related subject (or equivalent qualification or professional experience)
  • experience of conducting a research project
  • experience of conducting human participant testing
  • good skills in statistical analysis


The successful applicant will be based at Smartlife’s premises in Manchester and will work closely with the support and guidance of Dr John Dickinson and Dr Sam Winter at the University of Kent. This is an exciting opportunity to work at a senior level within Smartlife.

SmartlifeInc, founded in 2010 and based in Manchester, are specialists in smart garment technology. They have developed innovative, patented textile sensors, electronics and firmware that are capable of detecting all of the body’s biophysical signals, and delivering actionable insight to users via mobile apps. The sensors and electronics can be integrated into any close-fitting clothing, and are protected by five patent families with patents registered in 23 global territories and a number of patents pending.


The School of Sport and Exercise Sciences is a leading department for the study of sport that is friendly, dynamic and innovative. Based on the University of Kent’s award-winning Medway Campus they are an ambitious academic department set up in 2001. Their aim is to establish the University of Kent as a premier institution for Sport and Exercise in teaching and research.
