MultiSim is a five-year programme that aims to create a new modelling framework for the human musculoskeletal system. The Ł6.7M Frontier Engineering grant from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) – awarded to the world leading and innovative Insigneo Institute – will improve treatments for diseases of the musculoskeletal system.


The post holder will generate a 3D realistic finite element (FE) model of the growing mouse knee joint through in vivo and ex vivo microcomputed Tomography (µCT) imaging. A combination of contrast enhanced µCT, well-established staining methods, novel elastic registration algorithms, and adaptive biomechanical simulations will be used to explore the relation between mechanics and biology on the process of knee joint growth in mice. In addition, a novel mechanoregulation algorithm for bone and cartilage growth will be explored by means of constrained optimisation techniques.


Applicants should hold a PhD in the Life Sciences, Engineering, Physics, Biology or related disciplines and be familiar with finite element modelling (Ansys/Abaqus), µCT imaging, and the biomechanics of the mouse knee joint. The post is full time (Starting ASAP). The post-holder will report to Dr Mario Giorgi and Dr Enrico Dall’Ara, Department of Human Metabolism, The University of Sheffield.
