    Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Biomechanics, Queen's University, Canada

    The Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering in the Faculty of Engineeringand Applied Science at Queen’s University invites applications for a tenure-track facultyposition with specialization in Biomechanics. Preference will be given to candidates at therank of Assistant Professor; however, in the case of a truly exceptional candidate, atenured appointment at the rank of Associate Professor may also be considered. Thepreferred starting date is July 1, 2018. Salary is commensurate with qualifications andexperience.

    Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a related disciplinecompleted at the start date of the appointment. Our Department is committed to mentoringjunior faculty and welcomes applications from candidates who have received a Ph.D.within the last 10 years, but no later than the start date of this appointment. Preferablythis Ph.D. is combined with postdoctoral, industrial, post-secondary teaching and/or otherrelevant experience.

    Providing opportunities for junior faculty to develop a strong teaching and research profileand maintaining an environment where all faculty can thrive are our top priorities. Supportfor course development and delivery is provided by the Department, the Queen’s Centrefor Teaching and Learning, and the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science inaddition to the Dean’s Educational Advancement Grants and access to a range ofeducational technologies as well as the Faculty Teaching and Learning Team. Supportfor junior faculty to develop strong research programs incudes a significant ResearchInitiation Grant, grant writing workshops and review services, funding support for graduatestudents through the Queen’s Graduate Award program, and one-to-one mentorship fromsenior faculty members.

    The successful candidate will provide evidence of high quality scholarly output thatdemonstrates potential for independent research leading to peer assessed publicationsand the securing of external research funding, as well as strong potential foroutstanding teaching contributions at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, andan ongoing commitment to academic and pedagogical excellence in support of theDepartment’s programs. Candidates should provide evidence of their ability to workcollaboratively in an interdisciplinary and student-centred environment. The successfulcandidate will also be required to make substantive contributions through service to theDepartment, the Faculty, the University, and/or the broader community.

    Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, orthopaedic biomechanics, sportsbiomechanics, computational biomechanics, biomaterials, tissue mechanics and cellmechanics. Preference will be given to candidates with an outstanding research record,or those who demonstrate the potential to become excellent researchers, and who possessindustrial experience.

    The successful candidate is expected to initiate a leading-edge research program thatincludes direct interaction with researchers at the Human Mobility Research Centre (seehttp://www.hmrc.ca), apply for and obtain external funding to support research andgraduate students, supervise graduate students and teach undergraduate courses in thecore curriculum of Mechanical and Materials Engineering as well as graduate courses intheir specific areas of research interest. In addition, the successful candidate will beexpected to contribute to the development of curriculum and to undertake administrativeresponsibilities through service to the University, Faculty, Department and theengineering profession. Licensure as a Professional Engineer (PEng) in Ontario, oreligibility to acquire licensure in Canada, is an essential requirement. Renewal of thisappointment will be contingent on attaining PEng. licensure.

    The Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Queen's University(http://me.queensu.ca) has approximately 30 faculty members working in the areas ofBiomechanical Engineering, Design & Manufacturing, and Energy & Fluid Systems, andMaterials Engineering. The Department currently has an enrolment of over 500undergraduate students and about 150 graduate students. Research in the Departmentis supported by four research chairs: Tier 1 CRC in Mechanics of Materials, NSERCIndustrial Research Chair in Nuclear Materials, Tier 1 CRC in Computational Turbulence,and Queen’s Research Chair in Computational Fluid Dynamics.

    Queen’s University and Kingston General Hospital (KGH) have identified human mobilityas a major health and social issue. Nearly one-third of the population will be significantlyaffected by musculoskeletal disease during their lifetime. However, current treatments areoften invasive, costly and are in ever-increasing demand with increased life expectancy.The Human Mobility Research Centre (HMRC) serves to encourage and facilitatecollaboration between researchers in medicine, engineering, health sciences andinformation technology that fosters innovation through musculoskeletal projects (seehttp://www.hmrc.ca).
