Blast Motion is the official bat sensor technology of Major League Baseball (MLB). The professional team solution is currently used by approximately half of the MLB teams, including the 2017 World Series Champions Houston Astros. MLB teams have used the Blast Motion Pro Team solution for scouting, player development, R&D, and data analytics. Lead Engineer Sports Science IoT Algorithm Development

Blast Motion is looking for a self-driven, ambitious team player that will help to design and develop advanced biomechanical and physics-based algorithms addressing both current and future motion tracking applications and mass-market products.

Responsibilities will include:

  • The algorithm lead will be a foundation stone member of our core team of biomechanists, data scientists, and algorithm and software developers to create state-of-the-art motion-tracking products for amateur to elite level pro athletes.
  • Capability to assist in development of KPI application requirements and translate them into state-of-the-art biomechanical-based algorithms for performance enhancement through feedback-based training solutions.
  • Design and develop new multi-sensor fusion algorithms to advance our current and future motion tracking applications on sensor, mobile, and cloud computing platforms.
  • Extend and optimize existing and future computer vision processing algorithms for execution on mobile and cloud computing platforms.
  • Research and apply advanced mathematical techniques and biomechanical principles to analyze data captured from a variety of technologies, including 9 DOF inertial measurement units (IMU), 3D optical motion capture system, 2D computer vision, force plates, and EMG sensors.
  • Assist our sports science lab in data collection and analysis during product validation and testing for all developed biomechanical-based algorithms.
  • Leadership role in identifying new trends in scientific research related to motion tracking, optimization theory, sensor fusion, and machine learning.
  • Technical leadership role to help drive the architecture, design, planning, and code development of next generation sensor fusion for measuring the human body in motion.
  • Work directly and collaboratively with SW architect, product managers, QA, and end users to ensure that delivered products meet and exceed expectations.
  • Provide technical oversight for other algorithm and IoT sensor / data fusion software developers.
  • Work collaboratively with our CTO for new intellectual property generation.

Requirements and Preferred Skills:

  • 5+ years application experience in the field of 3D biomechanics or dynamics, inertial sensors, wearable technology, control systems, and/or advanced numerical methods.
  • In depth experience with inertial sensor processing and sensor fusion to detect, filter, qualify, and quantify motion with high accuracy from 9DOF IMU.
  • Ability to understand, design, and implement complex algorithms efficiently and correctly.
  • Strong expertise in one or more of the following areas: motion tracking algorithms, nonlinear optimization, digital signal processing, Kalman filtering, sensor fusion, or statistical state estimation.
  • Experience in creating rapid development / simulation environments using Python (preferred), Matlab, or equivalent.
  • Strong production level programming skills in C/C++ and ability to develop highly sustainable code. Programming experiences with Objective-C a strong plus.
  • Expertise in computer/machine vision and/or machine learning is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of collaborative development tools (e.g. JIRA, GitHub).
  • Strong mathematical and analytical background, problem-solving skills, collaborative, and desire to acquire new knowledge.
  • Passionate towards sports performance and analysis.
  • Ability to work in an autonomous, fast-paced startup environment.


  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or related technology field.
