The Neuroplasticity and Motor Behavior Laboratory (NMBL) at Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute (MRRI) has an opening for a research assistant (BS level), beginning Summer/Fall 2018. Under the direction of Dr. Shailesh Kantak, the laboratory conducts research on brain mechanisms that underlie motor learning and motor recovery in people with and without neurological damage. The overarching goal of the lab is to develop effective, evidence-based rehabilitation treatments for patients with neuromuscular disorders through better understanding of brain mechanisms that implement motor recovery. Current NMBL projects are focused on (1) neural bases of bimanual coordination after stroke, and (2) understanding the effect of aerobic exercise interventions on brain plasticity in stroke survivors. Our RAs gain valuable experience working closely with individuals with stroke and other neuromuscular conditions.
With appropriate training and supervision, the RA will conduct experiments with human subjects, conduct exercise sessions for stroke survivors, help analyze kinematic and neurophysiologic data, and gain experience in disseminating research via manuscript preparation and presentation at scientific meetings. They will also have opportunities to build skills relating to exercise testing/training for patients with neurologic disorders, non-invasive brain stimulation techniques, and motion capture. This Research Assistant position is an excellent opportunity for a recent Bachelor’s level graduate who wishes to expand their skill-set and C.V. by working full-time in a non-academic research institute before advancing to graduate studies.
Requirements: An ideal candidate will have (1) a strong academic background in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Neuroscience, Psychology, or Biomedical/Mechanical Engineering or related discipline, (2) a strong interest in integrating different fields of movement science such as motor control and exercise physiology, (3) interest in understanding human motor behavior and brain relationships, (4) ability and interest in testing human participants, (5) experience in MATLAB programming is highly desired, but not mandatory and (6) excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills. Preference will be given to applicants with prior research experience, particularly in motor control or learning.
