The Medical Device Obligations Taskforce (MDOT) is a Horizon 2020 funded project. Theidea is to enable and to offer platform-based simplified conformity assessmentsupport, and to combine the data and knowledge from different stakeholders tofulfil the manufacturer obligations laid out by medical device regulations. Theplatform will be built to include ‘one-stop-shop’ processing, meaning that allaspects from development to clinical testing are considered and can be coveredby partners within the MDOT platform or by a network of associated partnersthat will be built during the project phase. This support includes continuoussupport on regulatory and funding aspects to preserve innovation and economicstrength, reduce animal testing, and to safeguard the medical deviceregulation’s new level of patient safety.
The overall aim of MDOT is the prevention of a massive loss of innovationand economic strength in the European medical device industry by provision ofexpertise and data by a consortium of medical device stakeholders thusstrengthening medical device companies in an aggravated regulatory environment.
As part of this over-arching aim, your role will be to co-ordinate andundertake materials characterisation of the latest hydrogel based coatingsusing state of the art mechanical testing and modelling methods. You will havethe opportunity to develop and enhance these methods while working togetherwith a team of thirteen partners from across Europe.
The University of Southampton will be one of the test centres that willundertake standardised testing to generate data and reports which will formpart of the database. In addition, we will develop new test methods as part ofa test bed for increasing the safety and lifetime of total joint arthroplastyusing state of the art testing protocols on wear measurement and computationalmodelling. The test bed will focus on the assessment of novel wear-resistanthydrogel coatings, which resemble the properties of cartilage, applied to thebearing surfaces of orthopaedic joint prostheses.
The role will involve leading the Southampton Test centre’s testing,characterisation and modelling work.
You will hold a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications andexperience in mechanical engineering and/or materials. You will have a detailedunderstanding and knowledge of materials characterisation, both mechanical andchemical and experience in laboratory experimentation and modelling ofmaterials. You should be capable of critical evaluation and interpretation ofdata, and the production of scientific papers and reports.
Experience and knowledge of nanomechanical and tribological testing of softmaterials and hydrogels is desirable. In particular experience ofnanoindentation, pin on disk testing, surface characterisation and modelling isalso desirable.
