The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) has awarded our group a grant to develop affordable orthopaedic devices for in low-to-middle income countries in collaboration with external partners and healthcare professionals working in Sri Lanka. Applications are invited for a 11 month Postdoctoral Research Associate position to improve our currently developed external fixator prototypes by (a) gathering feedback from end-users, front-line staff and other stakeholders, (b) utilising computational modelling tools, (c) planning and conducting lab testing according to standards, (d) planning and conducting short-scale pre-clinical and clinical trials. The appointed postdoc will become key member of the research group and undertake field trips to Sri Lanka where they will work closely with end-users, front-line staff, collaborators, and key stakeholders.





The post will be based in the continuously growing research group focused on frugal innovation in healthcare within the Musculoskeletal Medical Engineering Centre. Within the last year our research group has been awarded numerous grants and our ambition is to continue growing by appointing researchers who will be invested in this work and are aiming to become academic leaders in the field. Currently we are aiming to employ four researchers to work on the development of affordable prosthetic and orthotic devices, and orthopaedic tools as well as the analysis of data from clinics in low-to-middle income countries (links can be found in the related jobs section). Duties and responsibilities
You will be responsible for improving our current designs for a temporary external fixator with end-users, front-line staff and other partners. You will be responsible for planning and conducting all necessary structural analysis tests, using both computational and experimental techniques.


You will work closely with internal and external partners and contribute to various projects. You will have the opportunity to extend our research network, and propose and lead new research projects.


You will have the opportunity to supervise MEng/MSc students and to support the supervision of PhD candidates. Experiences in other teaching roles, including lecturing, will be enabled as part of the broad range of career development opportunities that Imperial College makes available to its postdoctoral research staff.


Essential requirements
The ideal candidate will have:


a PhD (or equivalent) in biomechanics or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience.


Practical experience within a research environment and/or publication in relevant and refereed journals


Experience of product development (prototyping, user-centred design and testing)


Experience of conducting research in orthopaedic biomechanics


Experience of working in multidisciplinary environment (with specific groups of people, e.g. sponsors, patients, healthcare professionals etc.)


Experience of assisting in scoping new projects and setting research priorities


Ability to conduct a detailed review of recent literature


Ability to carry out advanced database and statistical analyses


Ability to develop and apply new concepts


Creative approach to problem-solving


Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to deal with a wide range of people


Excellent written communication skills and the ability to write clearly and succinctly for publication


Ability to organise own work with minimal supervision


Ability to prioritise own work in response to deadlines


Advanced computer skills, including word-processing, spreadsheets and the Internet


Ability to direct the work of a small research team and motivate others to produce a high standard of work


Willingness to work as part of a team and to be open-minded and cooperative


Flexible attitude towards work


Discipline and regard for confidentiality and security at all times


Willingness to undertake any necessary training for the role





Further information
You will have a PhD (or equivalent, or near completion of PhD) in an area pertinent to the research subject i.e. Biomechanics, Bioengineering, Mechanical Engineering or similar. Previous experience of product development is desired. Experience of developing low-cost products for the markets of low-to-middle income countries is highly desirable. The candidate must have excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to work with a wide range of people from interdisciplinary background to maximise the impact of potential outputs.


This is a fixed term position for 11 months.


Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range 34,397 - 37,486 per annum.
