Postdoctoral Fellow in Injury Prevention, Treatment, Rehabilitation and Physical Performance


The Warrior Research Center (WRC) and Neuromechanics Research Laboratory (NuRL) in the School of
Kinesiology at Auburn University is seeking one postdoctoral fellow interested in working with Tactical
Athlete injury prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and performance.


The WRC and the NuRL combine physiology, biomechanics, engineering, nutrition, neurophysiology,
functional movement and sports medicine to investigate the neuromuscular and physiological effects of
orthopedic and neuromuscular injury with the goal of developing new prevention, treatment and
rehabilitation methods and to improve tactical athlete performance. Our work is done with a focus on
evidence/science-based practice with the goal of solving real world problems. Professor JoEllen Sefton,
Ph.D., LAT, ATC is the Director of the NuRL and the Auburnís WRC. The goal of the WRC is to serve as a center of collaboration between researchers, the Military, and tactical athletes to further the development and implementation of new knowledge. Research training will be conducted in the context of the development of new and on-going studies, as
well as the analysis of existing datasets. The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to
work with Dr. Sefton to process, analyze, and publish existing and new datasets. Fellows will be
expected to advance ongoing projects and to collaborate with Dr. Sefton, her students, and her
collaborators to develop new studies in the area of Tactical Athlete injury and performance. There will
be a significant emphasis on professional development, including training on independent lab
operations, writing manuscripts for publication, disseminating results, obtaining funding, and mentoring
student researchers (doctoral, masters and undergraduate).


The position is a full-time (100% FTE) research dedicated fellowship for 1 year guaranteed.
Additional yearly contracts are dependent on the availability of funds and the performance evaluations.
Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. The anticipated start date is January 6, 2020. The
position is located in Auburn, AL in the School of Kinesiology. Fellows will be expected to submit an application for external funding to a major federal agency or private foundation by the end of their first year. Fellows will have opportunities to develop collaborations with other Auburn faculty interested in injury prevention, exercise physiology, biomechanics, rehabilitation, and orthopedics. Collaborations with Auburn University Sports Medicine will be a likely part of this fellowship. Prior doctoral or postdoctoral training experience in statistical analysis, especially with large data sets is required. Preference will be given to candidates with proficiency with R and experience with physiological data collection and blood biomarkers in the laboratory and the field. Experience with MATLAB, LabView, Python, and SPSS is a plus.
Responsibilities:
1. The Fellow will work with Dr. Sefton and her laboratory team to design and complete research
projects on injury prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and athlete performance.
The fellow will also work with Dr. Sefton to process, analyze, and publish existing datasets.
2. The fellow will assist in running of the NuRL laboratory, including: the design of new experiments,
data collection, analysis data, regular participation in lab meetings and journal clubs, assisting
in data entry and analysis, helping to maintain and write IRBs, and training and supervision
of students.
3. Assist in the preparation of funding proposals and reports.
4. Professional activities (reviewing, presenting, meetings, collaborations, etc.)

Required Qualifications:
1. PhD in a discipline related to musculoskeletal injury, such athletic training, kinesiology, exercise
science/physiology, or biomedical engineering at the time employment begins. While applicants
with a wide range of specializations within the field of Kinesiology will be considered, we seek
those who have applied their specialty to injury prevention, rehabilitation or performance.
2. Excellent interpersonal communication skills and work place collegiality.
3. Experience working with human subjects.
4. Enthusiastic, highly motivated with strong work ethic, and a history of success.
5. Established ability to work independently and in teams.
6. Excellent writing and analytic skills as evidenced by application materials and multiple
peer-reviewed publications and/or presentations.
7. Must meet eligibility requirements for work in the United States at the time appointment
begins and be able to continue working legally for the proposed term of employment.
Note: Those who are not US Citizens may not be able to work on all projects.


Desired Qualifications:
1. Have expertise in R statistical applications.
2. Experience with statistics and advanced quantitative methods.
3. Experience with collecting and working with blood and muscle biomarkers a bonus.
3. Experience with grant submission (e.g., DOD, NIH, etc.) and grant project management.
4. Experience with lab operations and management.
5. Experience and a desire to mentor students and lab personnel.
