Midwestern University is seeking a Biomedical Engineer- CAREN Operator to work in their new state of the art therapy building that is equipped with a Computer Assisted Rehabilitation Environment (CAREN) system. This individual is responsible for operating and maintaining the CAREN system which is a multi-sensory system that will be used for clinical analysis, rehabilitation, and evaluation of the human balance system using virtual reality. The primary goal is to lead the operation of the CAREN system within a clinical and scientific research driven environment of musculoskeletal, complex trauma, rheumatologically and neurological rehabilitation. The Biomedical Engineer will report to the Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs, Arizona College of Optometry.

Essential Responsibilities


  • Operate and maintain biomechanical laboratory equipment, specifically Computer Assisted Rehabilitation Environment (CAREN) system.
  • Operate CAREN D-Flow control software suite that provides real time data streams between many types of integrated hardware. It functions as the controlling software for the product.
  • Implement newly developed software into clinical and research applications.
  • Provide technical and procedural training and support to internal customers.
  • Support communications related to CAREN.
  • Provide equipment troubleshooting.
  • Assist in test planning and development to ensure instrument systems conform to requirements.
  • Learn and maintain expert level knowledge of product features, operation and application.
  • Perform systems upgrades.

Education and/or Experience

Bachelorís degree in Biomedical Engineering, Biomechanical Engineering or related field required. Masterís degree in Biomedical Engineering or Biomechanical Engineering is preferred. 2-4 years of previous related work experience with biomechanical laboratory equipment is required. Previous experience in the medical device industry or work experience in a clinical setting is preferred. Must have solid technical skills. Previous experience with complex electromechanical systems and troubleshooting is desired. Must be able to speak English.
The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, proactive, and have the ability to work independently. The individual must have strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple projects.

Computer Skills

Computer proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook). Experience with CAREN D-Flow desired.

Language Skills

Intermediate skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routing reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Reasoning Ability

Intermediate skills: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Mathematical Ability

Intermediate skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interests, commissions and proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
