We have an extraordinary opportunity in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Insigneo Institute for in silico Medicine for a Research Associate in Sensor Based Mobility Assessment.

This is an excellent opportunity to join the Mobilise-D research project (https://www.mobilise-d.eu). This five-year project started in March 2019 as part of the Innovative Medicine Initiative (IMI). The IMI is an EU public-private partnership funding health research and innovation, working to improve health by speeding up the development of, and patient access to, innovative medicines, particularly in areas where there is an unmet medical or social need.

We are looking for applicants with a PhD (or who are close to completion/have equivalent experience) in Engineering, Physics, or similar disciplines and with a strong expertise in measuring and modelling of human movement in general and with processing of data from wearable sensors in particular. The post-holder is expected to work independently and with minimal supervision and to contribute to the activity of the research group with the supervision of junior team members. The post is full time and available for two years. The post-holder will report to Professor Claudia Mazzà in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Sheffield.


You will be involved in one of the largest initiatives in the field by being part of a consortium that consists of clinical/academic partners, SMEs and industrial partners, from 12 countries, including all the most prestigious centres in Europe. They will work to jointly develop and implement a digital mobility assessment solution to demonstrate that real-world digital mobility outcomes can successfully predict relevant clinical outcomes and provide a better, safer and quicker way to arrive at the development of innovative medicines.


Within this context of excellence, and in collaboration with the Sheffield Biomedical Research Centre (http://sheffieldbrc.nihr.ac.uk), this post will contribute toward the development of digital mobility outcomes to monitor and evaluate people’s gait based on sensors worn on the body in patients with Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and other neurodegenerative diseases. Main activities will include signal processing and analysis of data from real world monitoring.


You will also contribute to the supervision of other members in the team (PhD and UG students) and to the production of project reports, documentation, standards and manuals.
