    DIRECTOR OF RESEARCH Ė DIVISION OF ATHLETIC TRAINING

    SCHOOL OF MEDICINE

    West Virginia University (WVU) is seeking an Assistant/Associate Professor to serve as the Director of Research for the Division of Athletic Training degree program. The academic program in Athletic Training has been relocated from the College of Physical Activity and Sport Science to the WVU School of Medicine Professional Programs Unit. The MSAT program recently received University approval and has applied to the CAATE for a change in level of degree.     The Professional Programs unit is home to over 1,000 students enrolled in degree programs including exercise physiology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, medical laboratory science, immunology, pathologistís assistant, physician assistant, and health information management. The School of Medicine is part of a thriving academic medical center, which includes Schools of Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Public Health. Together, the five schools provide robust opportunities and programs for interprofessional education, collaborative practice and research.

    The Director of Research, in collaboration with the Division Chair, will lead and advance the research efforts within the Division of Athletic Training. The Director of Research will be responsible for teaching in the Masterís Program, contribute to the Division initiatives, and assist in the recruitment and retention of MSAT students. Successful candidates will also be required to facilitate research collaborations with faculty in the Division of Athletic Training along with researchers and clinicians in the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute, WVU Sports Medicine, School of Medicine Professional and Undergraduate Programs, Department of Orthopedics, Department of Emergency Medicine, and the Morgantown community. The Director of Research will also be responsible for developing and maintaining a robust student research program that includes integration of graduate and undergraduate students across the School of Medicineís professional programs and facilitate grant funding opportunities for faculty in the Division of Athletic Training.

    The Director of Research will also contribute to the Divisionís initiatives that include the development of an Athletic Training Residency program and dual credentialed degree programs.

    Applicants must meet the following criteria for consideration:
    • An earned PhD in sports medicine or related field.
    • Contemporary expertise in the field of athletic training.
    • Previous clinical practice as an athletic trainer.
    • Previous teaching responsibilities within an athletic training education program.
    • Experience in mentoring student research.
    • Evidence of a successful applied research and scholarship agenda.
    • Certification and good standing with the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer.
    • Eligible for obtaining licensure, or currently licensed in the state of West Virginia as an athletic trainer.
    • All qualifications must be met by the time of the appointment


    In addition to the required qualifications listed above, candidates with the following qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:
    • Research agenda focused on identifying and managing risk factors for athletic injury.
    • Record of interprofessional collaboration in research.
    • History of extramural funding or potential for funding.
    • Demonstrated professional service at state, regional, national, and/or international levels.


    West Virginia University is a land grant Carnegie-designated Doctoral Research/Extensive institution, with approximately 32,500 students, including 27,000 undergraduate and 5,500 graduate/professional students. The WVU Health Sciences Center includes the Schools of Pharmacy, Medicine, Dentistry, Public Health and Nursing. Patient care facilities include a 575-bed teaching hospital, a Level I trauma center, and a 70-bed psychiatric hospital. Morgantown is within easy traveling distance of Washington, DC, to the east, Pittsburgh, PA, to the north, and Cleveland and Columbus, OH, to the northwest. Morgantown has 55,000 residents and is rated as one of the best small towns in the U.S., with affordable housing, excellent schools, a picturesque countryside and many outdoor activities.

    First consideration will be given to applications received by March 31, 2020.

    Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. The appointment date is negotiable, but the goal is to have the position filled no later than May 1, 2020. This position may be tenure track or non-tenure track, depending on the qualifications and research expectations of the candidate. Faculty members in the Division of Athletic Training are afforded a differential workload allowing for customization of expectations based on research expertise, clinical/teaching expertise, and service obligations. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience of the candidate.
