Post doc vacancy
in EU funded Training and Mobility of Researchers project NEUROS

cooperative project between University of Twente ( Peter H. Veltink)
and University College London (dr. Nick de N. Donaldson).

Experimental evaluation of FES supported standing strategies

Start date: as soon as possible
Nationality: EU-citizen, non-Dutch, non-UK

1 year at University of Twente, Enschede, the Netherlands
1 year at University College London, London, England, UK

Within the EU funded project NEUROS, a two-year postdoc position is available for investigating strategies for FES supported mobility, specifically standing up and sitting down in paraplegics. In recent years, several control strategies have been proposed for these tasks, however, experimental evaluation has been limited. The objectives of the proposed research are:
1. to identify and develop alternative control methods for FES supported standing up, standing and sitting down, and
2. experimental comparative testing of selected strategies for FES supported standing up, standing and sitting down.

This will require work in at least the following areas:
* developing instrumentation to measure biomechanical variables;
* programming controllers;
* measuring biomechanical and physiological variables;
* carrying out clinical experiments and trials;
* analysing the data to understand whether the controllers are behaving as intended; and evaluating their performance for use outside the laboratory.

The postdoc will work at both the University of Twente and University College London, having a one year appointment at each institution. This project should strengthen the cooperation between both groups and combine the expertise of both. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Electrical, Mechanical or Systems Engineering or Movement Sciences, and should have experience in experimental research involving human subjects, preferably in neural prostheses or motor control. Experience of biomechanics and/or instrumentation will be valuable.

NEUROS is a project in the EU Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR) program. The project is carried out in a network of 10 European research institutes in the area of Neuromuscular Sensing and Control. In order to increase mobility of researchers foreign EU citizens can only be employed within TMR projects. For more information on the NEUROS project see, look under 'projects' and than 'the "Neuros" project".
